Follower Of Jean-Baptiste Oudry (French 1686-1755)

The Dead Roe
oil on canvas, unsigned, mid to late 18th century copy of "The Dead Roe" by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Wallace Collection, London, 1721.

One of Oudry's most well known early masterpieces "The Dead Roe" was copied several times. The most important copy was in the Chateau of Conde-en-Brie Collection, once owned by the Leriget de la Faye who belonged to a circle of major collectors in Paris. The work reflects a vogue for contemporary Venetian painting circa 1720. Often called Genre Pittoresque, this new French decorative style creates an asymmetrical pattern organised along curves and swirls. This principal with its richness of colours and surface patterns became typical for the emerging Rococo style.
