After studying at the Danish Royal Academy in Copenhagen, he was strongly influenced by his teachers who included some of Denmark’s finest artists, including Peder Severin Krøyer, Janus La Cour, and Godfred Christensen. Monsted had extraordinary talent in interpreting light and air, and Still Water is an excellent example of his early talents.

Brownell first visited the Caribbean around 1911. By 1915, he had made several trips to the area and painted approximately forty canvases, watercolours and pastels. Eric Brown, the first director of the National Gallery, was an advocate of Brownell’s work and accompanied him to the West Indies on at least one occasion. It is recognized that his style underwent a significant change after these visits as he was enchanted by the brilliant tropical light and world of exotic textiles. This small body of work is known to be some of his best and most sought after, many being housed in major Canadian institutions.

Lake Como is a bustling town where wealthy Milanese summered to escape the oppressive heat of the city. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the region enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity as the area’s silk manufacturing began to flourish. Large villas and summer retreats were built along the lakeside and in the hills above Argegno.
