Gunmetal is a strong alloy of copper, tin and zinc which can be subjected to heavy loads. Before being replaced by steel the metal was used in the production of guns and ordnance, being preferable for gears, bearings and fittings as it withstands atmospheric, steam and seawater corrosion.
