Alfred Casson was the youngest member of the Group of Seven and with a career that spanned most of the 20th century. He joined the Group during their 5th exhibition in 1926, when he was invited to become a member to replace Frank Johnston. At the time, Casson was the young assistant of Frank Carmichael’s at Rose and Mann, but would become the Group's unofficial historian as well as a highly respected artist in his own right.
Located an hour south of Algonquin is Lake Baptiste and the small community of Baptiste. “During the fifties”, Duval wrote, “Casson’s favourite painting place was Lake Baptiste, located about 10 miles from the town of Bancroft, Ontario… He painted there almost exclusively from 1953 to 1955.” Casson did not limit himself to the lake, however and produced several oils and watercolours of farms in the area. These rural views with their rugged figures explore themes of Canadian resilience.
