The portrait and genre artist Emile Pierre Metzmacher, born in Paris in 1815, was known for depicting figures in lavish interiors with stunningly intricate detail.  A student of the well-known French artist Gustave Boulanger, as well as Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre and Florent Joseph Marie Willems, Metzmacher first exhibited at the Salon in 1863. He won honourable mentions in 1879 and 1899 and continued to exhibit until 1890, including at the British Royal Academy in 1883. This exquisite work depicts a young couple engaged in a sewing lesson, the gentleman diligently stitching while his lady watches and offers instruction. The opulent home is accentuated by the artist's intricate and precise technique on panel which highlights the luxurious interior and expensive fabrics.
