The French painter Emile George Weiss, known as Georges Weiss, was a student of Léon Bonnat and Antoine Grison in Paris, and was inspired by Ernest Meissonier and Swiss artist Gustave Brion. He exhibited in Paris at the Salon and the Artistes Francais, and was a founder of the Salon d’Automne. Weiss’ paintings, in particular the landscape and genre scenes for which he is best known, demonstrate meticulous attention to detail. This painting is a fine example of his work depicting a finely dressed couple shopping at a flower market in a square, and is housed in an ornate gilt frame.
